How the right Response to Intervention can Help your Child

When a teacher identifies the requirements of a student or students that struggle with learning needs, using focused methodologies and instructions across varied levels of help, from classroom sessions to special programs, this is what one can define as Response to Intervention.

Every year there are many young students that have problems with learning and reading. Most of them are referred to counsellors, so that disabilities can be diagnosed and learning challenges can be overcome. Moreover, counsellors here would want to check if the student actually has a case of learning disabilities or if it is psychological, so that they can then refer the candidate for special education programs.

Parents await such results with apprehension and hope. Sadly, in most cases the results for every student referred wouldn’t match the state’s criteria to get their child enrolled in special education programs, especially under the well known Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA. Students that don’t gain access to IDEA, would still have to go through school and struggle.

Such news would leave the parent saddened and distraught, worried to be honest. However, parents are also relieved to know that their young ones aren’t suffering from LD’s or dyslexic conditions. In school however, students do show LD signs, which may not have matched the criteria for them to qualify for special education. This means it negatively affects the learning curve of the child in school, and hence he or she cannot achieve or learn as much as they ought to.

There are schools that have understood this concern, and provide temporary help and assistance. They use intervention programs, namely Title I, this helps students from lower financial means that can now have all the help they want for low costs or free. The drawback here is that the curricula was never formally checked, no mandates and no long term support as well.

Every year there are so many students who go without being checked for LD, they are left undiagnosed and not catered to. This is because their cases are seen ineligible for the services of special education. Students thus have to go to schools with no special education assistance and have to continue their struggles, sometimes carrying it over till college days, if they in fact can reach college.

Once again, all hope is not lost. If you or someone you know has a child or knows of one with reading and LD issues, check online and seek help. There are Response to Intervention software and programs that can help. Give a second chance to the bright mind, it’s a blessing.
